I purchased a Toshiba 655 Laptop and I was very happy with the initial quality of the product. Very lightweight and long battery life for 500 Dollars. However the product failed within 8 months (I think it was the harddisk drive) and I sent it for warranty repairs. However the product was sent back w/o any repairs to me stating that the keyboard had spills on it and the screen had a hairline crack within it (still working) and sent me repair quotes for the screen instead but not for the problem that I had reported. (very surprising I thought laptop shall naturally be covered for Key board spills also the laptop had exceptionally soft top cover which probably did not protect the screen but that was not my problem). I called up warranty repaira center but all the executives includin manager were very arrogant. I see that even on this page all customers have the same issue. It seems that Toshiba is reluctant to support any of its products even under warranty. My advice being the initial quality of the product is very deceptive and a purchaser is very likely to be frustrated upon any issues.

I ended up replacing the power jack myself with a part I purchased from Radio Shack. It took a couple hours to completely disassemble, replace the jack, and put back together and it's been working fine since. I did the same repair for my wife and after about 6 months we started having trouble with her laptop locking up, sometimes at random, sometimes when adjusting the screen position.

As a side note, I have also had nothing but trouble with power supplies for these laptops. The originals both died at the power jack. I purchased two replacements from eBay. The plug went back on one and sparks shot out of the box of the other. I purchased two additional replacements of a different brand from eBay and the boxes both melted! So, I managed to cut up the the cords, jacks, and power supply boxes of all six and cobbled together two units that actually work. It's been a total mess. If I didn't know something about electronics I'd be lost.

As another side note, we just replaced my wife's Toshiba with a brand new Acer and she loves it.

I had the same problem with the power supply on my laptop. When i called in I kept asking for the manager and the manager of the manager. The finally transferred me to the Toshiba Depot dept as the initial phon number is for a call center in India.I finally got one of the managers "voice mail". I left a message stating my dissatisfaction and that I would tell my story to the local newspapers and post on the internet of my terrible service from toshiba. i didn't expect anything to happen. But about a week later the manager from the 'TOSHIBA DEPOT' called me and said to send it in and they would fix it. My thoughts on this.....get as high up as you can to whoever your talking to meaning "managers and executives" and or send a letter to the CEO or PR person for toshiba. They dont want to lose customers and they understand that more than the workers do....its their job.

The problem is essentially a structural design flaw. The shear stress for the part was not correctly determined; I dare say it wasn't even considered and only the normal stress was considered when designing the part. I say this because parts that are toughened for shear stress normally have certain tale tell features that this, and most other, laptop does not have.

This was the same problem structural/construction engineers had with Architects for a long time. These days Architects are forced to take a few structural/engineering courses as they used to just simply design beautiful looking edifices without much thought to the structural functionality or interdependencies. I bring this up here as a thought focusing prism to help us understand where the default abides.

I had a similar problem. I sent in my computer because the usb ports wouldn't work properly. My computer was put on hold too, and on Feb. 17, 2010, I was told, by the case manager, that it appears I did physical damage to the usb ports. On Feb. 18, 2010, I was told that they had not looked at the usb ports yet, and I had cracked my screen.

When I confronted a toshiba representative, who handles Better Business Bureau cases, I was told that it doesn't matter what the case manager says, even if she lies.

I'll post my report from depot soon!!

Hello Pat,
Wow you got lucky and got the turn around @ the infamous "depot repair @ toshiba: back in a very brief waiting time. I am in the process of filing complaints and soon you will see a print screen of my diagnostic reports from the toshiba depot, which by the way, is a joke. There is no customer support number that you can call and EVER get a representative. If you wait on hold for over 2 hours (I did, left them on speaker phone) and @ the same time was trying to get someone online for another computer support security issue.
anyhow....
my point is toshiba has put the same comments on my depot status. I had a cracked LCD. FYI, while I went to NY last Dec, I had to lend my L305- to toshiba for some other issues to be repaired. First to go, & extremely important was my power adapter slot. W/in the 1st month I owned this computer that area was already barely functioning. I coincidently was waching tv that night and on a shopping channel they mentioned that on our Toshibas model the power adapter area is directly attached to the mother board, the guys of our laptop. I freaked, also, where I put my wireless mouse adapter, that usb port broke, computer about 6 months old. So I sent to Toshiba for these things to be repaired. OMG, when I got it back, which was approximately one week turn around time, the diagnostic fix it report read that they had replaced my hard drive (supposedly defective)??? replaced the usb board, base assembly and dc-in cable. came back perfect except the monitor looked different. I thought perhaps something happened with the shipping bk & forth. So, I still have about 4 months left on my manufacturer's warranty. I understand that certain things are not covered warranty and some are. I for example was told by toshiba they would fix it so I sent it in. I never have officially spoke to anyone in the repair depot and either requested the "$425 price quote" to fix the monitor to speak to me directly. I was calling every day like an idiot, someone picked up the phone one day, i had actually fallen asleep while waiting on hold, This person told me Toshiba would repair for $325, this is after I filed a complaint a few days prior to a customer service rep. I was and still am so frustrated. I live in a tourist area in sw florida. Which means, if I want to fix the computer, I can either pay for shipping and insurance both ways, to an out of town service center. OR, I got lucky, I had already priced the replacement part, and started making calls to local computer repair shops. I was persistent, first place wanted almost $600 locally priced the part at 3x what I priced it for at approx. 3 hours of labot @ $90/hour. I said NO way, computer is an awesome computer. I was hit by an suv a few years ago as a pedestrian and am bi-leg disabled. Having a functioning laptop and cell phone is essential for a person that cannot drive or walk. Still, consider the facts of Toshiba's repair area. I say how can they replace and fix all they did a little over a month ago, and now, after 3 shippings, they are going to deny me any phone calls, emails or acceptable offer to fix it. Be leary of manufacturer warranties. They just don't make things like they used to. I know this post has been rather lengthy , and I apologize for that, I just finally found a common ground where I feel for you & I felt comfortable to "casually tell my story"
thank you. good luck my friend
