Last week I found the gadget I have wanted for a long time.  The Obi110 by Obihai is a Voice Over IP (VOIP) adapter box that connects your wired or cordless home phone to paid and even free Internet-based phone services.

I have used Vonage, SunRocket, and BroadVoice for VOIP service over the last 10 years.  The price has ranged from $99 per year to nearly $30 per month.  This is still half of what I would pay for traditional phone service.  But, free is much more appealing.

This is how it works:

  1. Buy the box.  Feel free to click the “Buy from Amazon” button to the right.
  2. Sign up for a Free Google Voice account.
  3. Follow the Obi110 Instructions.

I have only had my Obi110 for a few days, but I am very pleased, so far.  The sound quality is better than through my current provider with no delay or echo.

Did I mention, the service is FREE, at least through the end of 2012.  After that, who knows what Google with offer?  But, even if they decide to charge 2 cents per minute, just for the minutes you use, that’s a wonderful deal for a land line.

Check it out!
